About us. . .                               .

Chelmsford Male Voice Choir can trace its origins back to 1903 when it sang to raise funds for British troops fighting in the Boer war. The choir was re-formed in 1948 by Bill Gane, who was eventually succeeded by his son Jack.

Many thousands of pounds have  been raised for local and national charities  and in 1999 the choir received a  Highly Commended Award for Services to the Arts from Chelmsford Borough Council.

The choir  has a membership in excess of 70, drawn from many walks of life.  Our repertoire includes many modern as well as traditional male voice choir pieces.  An increasing number of these have been specifically arranged for Chelmsford Male Voice Choir by our Musical Director, John Taylor.

The choir has sung with the Band of the Grenadier Guards at Colchester before an audience of 900 and  at the Essex W.I. Christmas Concert to an audience of over 1000  in the Brentwood Centre.  We have travelled to Brecon in South Wales to sing with Talgarth Male Choir and performed concerts at Whitby as guests of The Dalesmen Singers. The choir members were thrilled to sing in York Minster.  In 2004 we recorded our first CD entitled "Deep Harmony"

Our musical director John Taylor  was born in Llandrindod Wells, Powys.  Family links with chapel and choral groups ensured that, at an early age, he was introduced to the traditions of Welsh music making.
John became musical director in 1995 and is a member of the Association of British Choral Directors. He arranges a range of music specifically for the choir. The choir has grown in strength and has improved the quality of its performance through John's guidance.

Our accompanist Claire Lowe has played the piano from the age of eleven, having gained a place on the Performing Arts Programme offered by the former Rainsford High School (now St. Peter's College). At 18 she achieved Associated Board of The Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) Grade 8 with distinction. Claire continued her musical studies at Colchester Institute, graduating in 2007, with a 2:1 honours degree. in the same year she was awarded the ABRSM Diploma of Music in Piano Music Performance. She is currently with Havering Music School, teaching classroom music and piano throughout the Borough of Chelmsford.
